AI Front Desk Helper vs Goodcall
Goodcall is the budget pick a lot of contractors try first. Here's what you get, what you don't, and when it's enough.
What Goodcall is
Goodcall is a horizontal AI phone agent: restaurants, clinics, shops, and yes, contractors. Its distinctive choice is billing: unlimited minutes on every plan, priced instead on unique customers per month. Starter is $79/month per agent with 100 unique customers, one logic flow, three team members and 7-day data retention; Growth is $129 with 250 customers and three flows; Scale is $249 with 500 customers, 25 flows and unlimited retention. Extra customers are $0.50 each. There's a 14-day free trial, Zapier for handoffs, and call recordings and analytics.
It's a sensible product with an honest pricing model, and for a business whose calls are short and repetitive it's excellent value.
Where Goodcall is the better pick
- Your calls are long and your callers are repeat customers. Unlimited minutes plus unique-customer billing is the cheapest model there is for that shape of business.
- You want to try before you commit. A 14-day free trial and a $79 entry point are as low-risk as this category gets.
- You need several distinct agents (one per location or line) and are comfortable building logic flows yourself.
- You're not in home services. Goodcall's breadth is a feature if you're a dental office; it's a cost if you're a roofer.
Where it runs out for a contractor
Goodcall's job ends when the call does. It captures the lead and can push it to a CRM through Zapier, but it doesn't check your Google Calendar before promising a time, doesn't text the estimate you sent last Tuesday, doesn't hear "let me think about it" and respond to it, doesn't call your past customers, and doesn't reply to reviews. Those are the places contractors lose the job.
The logic-flow model also means you're the one building the conversation. That's flexible, and it's work. Starter gives you one flow, which in practice means one script for every kind of call.
One quiet gotcha: Starter keeps call and customer data for seven days. If a customer calls back in three weeks about the quote, the AI on Starter doesn't remember them.

How AI Front Desk Helper is different
AI Front Desk Helper is a monthly plan with 500 to 3,000 call minutes included and the contractor's pipeline built in rather than bolted on through Zapier. The booking step checks your Google Calendar's free/busy first. The estimate that doesn't close gets a follow-up sequence at 24 hours, 3, 5 and 10 days that stops the moment the customer replies. Objections on the call trigger a recovery script. And on Elite the tool turns outbound: AI calls to your past-customer list, review replies drafted as reviews land, and a scoreboard tying every phone number to the lead source it came from so you know what marketing to keep.
It costs more than Goodcall because it does more than Goodcall. That's the honest trade.
What AI Front Desk Helper does besides answer the phone
Answering the phone is the entry point, not the product. Here is the rest of what runs once a contractor is on AI Front Desk Helper:
- Booking that respects your calendar. Alex checks your own Google Calendar and offers real open times, so it never books a slot you're already on a job for. Jobs per time slot, arrival windows, appointment length, same-day booking and service days by ZIP code are all settings. Reschedules and cancellations move or remove the event.
- Crews, not just one calendar. Optional auto-assign books each job to a free crew member in turn, using their own calendar and work days, and adds them to the event. Repeating visits (weekly, every two weeks, monthly) can be paused for one customer or for the season.
- After-hours emergencies. You write what counts as an emergency and list up to three on-call phones. Alex rings them in order with a text briefing, and the tech presses 1 to take the call. Emergency texts and website chats alert the same phones, and a tech can reply CALL to be connected.
- Photos by text. Customers can text a photo to your number. Alex saves it to their card, forwards an emergency photo to the on-call phones, sends your Quick Quote link for a job it can price, and offers a visit for anything else.
- Straight answers on price. With the estimator turned on, for junk removal, window cleaning, pressure washing, house cleaning, pest control, garage doors, pool service, flooring, concrete, window installation, stump grinding and lawn care, Alex gives a ballpark from your own price sheet and says the crew confirms on site. Trades that price on site can set a service call fee, and Alex answers financing and insurance questions from what you set. No number you didn't give it.
- Instant online quotes. A branded quote-and-book page for your business (yours looks like quote.yourcompany.com) where customers get a ballpark and pick a time, day or night. Built in for painting, roofing, siding, fencing, gutters and the twelve trades above, and switched on with the estimator (included on Elite, a $20/month add-on on Basic and Pro).
- Estimate follow-up that doesn't quit. Text sequences at 24 hours, 3, 5 and 10 days on every quote that hasn't closed, written like a contractor, stopping the moment the customer replies.
- Objection detection. "Too expensive" or "need to think about it" triggers a recovery script instead of a polite goodbye.
- Outbound campaigns. AI calls and texts to your past-customer list for seasonal reactivation, win-backs and referral asks. You set the campaign; it dials.
- Google Business Profile, handled. Every new review gets an owner reply drafted for you; profile posts can be drafted, approved and scheduled weeks ahead; a profile health audit shows how you stack up against nearby competitors.
- Revenue coaching by lead source. Every phone number is tied to where it came from (Angi, LSA, Facebook, referral, yard sign), so the dashboard shows which marketing produces booked revenue and which to cut.
- Customer DISC profiles. Every caller and texter gets a buying-style read (D, I, S or C) from what they actually said, with a confidence flag, so you walk into the estimate knowing how to sell to them.
- Franchise HQ. One rollup across every location for multi-unit operators.
- Reseller program. Agencies can offer the whole system under their own brand. How it works.
- Optional add-on: AI Rep Coach. Records in-home estimates and coaches the people who sell, with manager review and team analytics. Sold separately, per seat.
Who should pick which
Pick Goodcall if you need the phone answered and leads captured, you're happy to build your own flows and Zapier handoffs, and $79 to $129 is the budget. It's a good product at that job and there's no shame in starting there.
Pick AI Front Desk Helper if you've realized the missed calls were only half the leak, and the other half is estimates that go quiet, calendar collisions, and marketing spend you can't attribute. That's the part Goodcall leaves to you.
Questions people ask
Is Goodcall really unlimited minutes?
Yes, as published. Goodcall bills on unique customers per month (100 on Starter, 250 on Growth, 500 on Scale) with $0.50 per additional customer, not on minutes.
Does Goodcall book appointments into Google Calendar?
It can hand off booking details through Zapier or a logic flow. It does not, as published, check calendar availability before offering a time.
Which one follows up on estimates?
AI Front Desk Helper, on Pro and above. Goodcall's product is inbound answering and lead capture.
Can I run both?
You could, but you'd be paying for two answering products. If you're on Goodcall and want the follow-up layer, moving to AIFDH Pro replaces it rather than adding to it.
Fifteen minutes. We'll call your business number, show you what the AI does after the call, and you decide.
